The performance of paper machines at paper mills degrades from time to time. Therefore, the company in charge of designing control systems for paper machines needs to utilize control engineers to figure out the source of the problem. If they notice that the model used in controller design is no longer a valid model to represent the behaviour of the process, they will need to re-identify the process and re-tune the controllers to compensate for the degraded performance.
