Includes the principal official documents from the UNGASS Special Session In June 1997 heads of government and senior representatives from over 130 countries met in New York to consider what progress had been made since the first Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, and to decide upon new priorities for the future. Tony Blair (who has written the Foreword to this volume) made clear the emphatic commitment of the British Government to the Rio/Agenda 21 process, and other world leaders re-emphasised their support. Earth Summit II presents the principal official documents agreed at the Summit with an authoritative analysis of where progress is and isn't being made, the reasons for this, and the priorities of the parties. It assesses the lengthy preparation for the Summit, analyses the proceedings and takes a constructive look at possible ways forward. The book contains the full text of the Agreement reached in New York, plus relevant UN documents; and the authors offer an authoritative overview of the positions held by various governments, and the significance of the agreements that were reached. Finally, the authors look forward to 2002, when the United Nations will undertake a further review ten years after Rio, and present some proposals for developing a more effective build-up of action and awareness between now and then.
