Early July of 1863 the United States experienced the largest battle of the Civil War in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Only days later, Confederate General John Hunt Morgan, with 2400 cavalry, boldly conducted a raid into southern Indiana. After five days of uncontested havoc, fear, theft and destruction was left in their wake. The small community of Vernon, Indiana was in their path.
