คำอธิบาย

Charles Kenney is a former journalist and the author of five works of nonfiction including John F. Kennedy: The Presidential Portfolio, Rescue Men, and three novels. In addition to his work as an author he serves as a consultant to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts on the company's quality initiative. In the late 1990s, treatment-related deaths or "complications" were the fifth leading cause of death for Americans. Spurred by the crisis, a group of dedicated physicians like Paul Batalden and Don Berwick made it their goal to study the concepts of "quality improvement" used at Toyota and NASA, and to apply them to the practice of medicine. This book tells their story, and how these "heretical" ideas have blossomed into a movement, bringing the focus back to where it should have always been: the patient. Most Americans are aware of the health care insurance crisis. But behind hospital doors lies a greater threat to patients' well-being-insufficient reliance on evidence-based care and widespread deficiencies in the overall quality of care. As many as 98,000 people die from preventable medical errors each year, while Americans on average get only half the care they need.
