Frederick Valentich, flying a Cessna 182L, departed Moorabbin for King Island at 18:19 on Saturday, 21st of October 1978.At 19:06, just south of Cape Otway, he reported another unidentied craft in close proximity and flying at speeds he could not identify.Outside radar coverage and alone, Melbourne Flight Service had advised "no known traffic".Fred never made it to King Island. No trace of either him or his aircraft has ever been found.
