It would be difficult to overstate the antiquity of the folklore of animals and plants. Certainly prehistoric, it is very possible as old as the human race. For one cannot imagine human beings, even of the most primitive type, without a set of beliefs in regard to the other living things by which they are surrounded. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive.
