Leptospirosis is a worldwide public health problem. It is especially a public health threat in humid and subtropical areas where most developing countries are located, but can also be a problem in more temperate climates also. It is a potentially serious but treatable zoonotic disease, with symptoms similar to those of other unrelated infections such as influenza, meningitis, hepatitis, dengue, viral haemorrhagic fevers. In order to distinguish leptospirosis from these diseases, this publication contains guidelines for its diagnosis, surveillance and control, concerned essentially with human leptospirosis.
