Despite recent improvements in health laboratory services in the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean region of the WHO, there is still a need to establish or improve quality assurance programmes. The second edition of this publication contains chapters on: quality assurance at the pre-analytical phases; control of laboratory investigations; comparability of results; data handling and processing; laboratory management and organisation; the use and maintenance of laboratory equipment; safety precautions; and external quality assessment.
